Rocket touches down in El Paso.
El Paso was originally known as El Paso Del Norte (The Pass of the North). Here Rocket visits three
missions that are actually older than the ones in San Antonio — Corpus Christi de la Ysleta, Nuestra
Señora de la Concepción del Socorro, and San Elizario Presidio Chapel.
The main story is highlighted in the light blue sections.
SCOPE This Out! features trivia from the places Rocket visits.

El Paso claims the first Thanksgiving. According to their history, Juan de Oñate gave thanks for his safe journey across the Rio Grande in April 1598 — 23 years before the Pilgrims.

El Paso is the Texas city that is the farthest west. Rocket gained an hour on his trip there because the city is in a different time zone than most of the state.

Corpus Christi
de la Ysleta

Established 1682, this
mission was orginally
named Nuestra Señora
del Carmen and is
Texas' oldest mission.
SAY WHAT???
Corpus Christi de la Ysleta and
Nuestra Señora de la Concepción
del Socorro were originally located
south of the Rio Grande.
Today, they are north of the Rio Grande.

Q: If the missions were not physically
moved, how can this be?

A: The Rio Grande changed course.
